Disgruntled Employee of the Day: An anonymous Toronto Star editor upset over Star publisher John Cruickshank’s decision to outsource union editing jobs to freelancers expresses her displeasure the best way he/she knows how: By marking up the internal memo notifying employees of said decision.

A reminder to our American friends who are saddened that ‘single payer’ health care didn’t pass the House today, only an expansion of existing systems, don’t panic.

Canada didn’t get it in one fell swoop either. It was an incremental build from the 1940s (when it worked just like the US) to 1966 (when it was reorganised to ensure every legal resident was covered for hospitals and doctors).

In between, accidents were covered first, later all hospital stays, later still, doctors appointments.

And while abortions are now, rightly, covered, there were not originally. But once the system is in place and running, medical decisions cease to determined in the legislature and instead are determined by the doctor and the patient.

If you are looking to emulate the Canadian system then, do what our forefathers-and-mothers did: take what you can get, and build on that.

For extra credit, here’s a New Yorker article on how the UK and France developed their own systems.

I’ve been think about this lately. However, my take was: Both wrestlers and rappers claim superiority of skills that have no real tangible or objective way to judge. I don’t think I can think of another area that does this. Not to mention similarities in their constant flexing of strength and swagger. And this is how careers are made in both professions, claiming to be better than the rest.

You can’t really claim that Biggie was “better” than Tupac (I’d argue that, but that’s my subjective opinion) because they’re completely different and you can’t really claim Andre the Giant was better than the Ultimate Warrior because wrestling is fake.

[via]

Miley Cyrus: 'I've Never Heard A Jay-Z Song'

Miley Cyrus: 'I've Never Heard A Jay-Z Song':
You’re breaking my heart, Miley.

I wish I could accurately describe the kind of anger and disappointment I’m feeling towards...

I wish I could accurately describe the kind of anger and disappointment I’m feeling towards the media as this Fort Hood shooting unfolds. The Vancouver Sun, for instance, mentioned that the shooter was Muslim in the 4th sentence of an article while waiting for the 20th PARAGRAPH to mention he was being tormented by his peers and was about to be deployed to Iraq. I’m obviously not making excuses for this heinous violence, however I can’t help but think that the two latter factors are so much more relevant in shaping our understanding of what happened there today. Pretty happy that this industry is in its final death throes.

Real talk.

Real talk.

"Nader Hasan also told a local Fox affiliate that his cousin said he heard “horrific things” from..."

“Nader Hasan also told a local Fox affiliate that his cousin said he heard “horrific things” from soldiers who had served in combat, and that he had been “dealing with harassment from his military colleagues.””

-
Mass Shooting at Fort Hood - The Lede Blog - NYTimes.com

If I said that this whole scenario loosely seems like a microcosom for 9/11 would that make sense? The whole being harassed and retaliating (“blowback”) thing and rather than focusing on the bigger issue at hand (“how we treat each other”; “foreign/social relationships”) all anyone wants to talk about is his religion.
